If it’s been awhile since you’ve spent some quality time with your significant other, maybe 48 hours in Wairakei Tourist Park is just the getaway you’ve been looking for. From new and exciting experiences, to simply relaxing in each other’s company, it’s all on offer here at a pace that suits you.

The first stop of your trip is checking in at Wairakei Resort. With a range of comfortable, modern rooms available, there’s two geothermally heated swimming pools, six outdoor hot tubs and an on-site wellness spa if you fancy some extra R&R.

Day one

Morning

There’s nothing quite like starting the day with a mountain bike ride along the picturesque Huka Falls River Trails, just grab a bike (or e-bike) from FourB (next to Kefi Cafe) and get exploring. From the stunning turquoise waters of the Waikato River, to gorgeous native bush, geothermal activity and places to dip your toes in – there’s photo opportunities aplenty, so have the camera at the ready.

Afternoon

Lake Taupo and Huka Falls from the air are nothing short of spectacular, which is why you should jump in a Heli Flight at The Hub and take it all in. You’ll see things you simply can’t appreciate at ground level.

As you touch back down from that exhilarating trip you may want something a little more ‘low key’, and that makes it the perfect time to visit Huka Honey Hive for a spot of shopping and some delicious honey tastings.

Evening

After such a busy day, your body will thank you for having a hot soak in the thermal pools at Wairakei Terraces – it’s absolute bliss. And once you’re truly relaxed and refreshed, enjoy a delicious a la carte dinner at Wairakei Resort, from where you can easily meander back to your room after dessert.

Day two

Morning

After a mandatory sleep in (you’re on holiday after all), get set for a round of golf. For experienced golfers, Wairakei International is the course for you. Or if casual is more your style, nine holes on the Wairakei Public Golf Course is a lot of fun followed by some hitting practice at Prodrive Golf.

Afternoon

Who’s hungry? If you’re looking for somewhere to dine for lunch, Huka Prawn Park has the only riverside restaurant in Taupo. From yummy food and cheeky treats, to a selection of local craft beer and wine matching recommendations, all with a beautiful view – what more could you ask for? And with your couple’s escape not quite complete, make sure you hitch a ride on the thrilling Huka Falls Jet boat ride. Peaking at speeds of 80km/hour, with thrilling 360 degree spins thrown in for good measure, nothing gets you closer to the majestic Huka Falls. It’s an experience you’ll never forget!

But before you hit the road home, why not hit the ultimate relax button with a traditional, homemade Devonshire Tea, set in the peaceful surrounds of Wairakei Natural Thermal Valley. It really is a lovely way to end your trip, while reminiscing about all the wonderful adventures you’ve just had.
